Concord High School Fire Academy is now Nationally Recognized

David Barbour of the NC Department of Public Instruction provided an update to the National Partnership for Careers in Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security about the Fire Academy programs statewide at the National Partnership Conference and Board of Directors meeting held on November 9-12, 2011 in Arlington, Virginia.

With this National recognition we have just last week been informed that we will be the first High School in the State of NC to offer the Emergency Medical Technician
class for certification next year.

The Weddle Tool Company Visits the Concord HS Fire Academy

In August of this year, Chief Barlow met Jack Harding of the Weddle Tool Company at the South Atlantic Fire Rescue Expo in Raleigh, NC. The consensus was that the recruits of the CHSFA needed to have one of their Forcible Entry Tools called the W- Tool. This would launch the recruits to the next level of skill beyond just the basics with F&E.

After several emails and a couple of phone calls the date was set and Dave Weddle - the President of the Company and Jack Harding - the Vice President of Business Operations drove down on November 16th from West Virginia and set up their props in the Commons area at the High School. The following morning the Intro to Public Safety class set up the area for local area Firefighters and Law Enforcement Officers to assemble and participate in the Train the Trainer class along with our Battalion 2 recruits. After completing the class, the W-Tool and a Fan Hanger Tool were presented to the Fire Academy.

During the off season when we are not going to be using the Tool for Training, we will share the W-Tool with the Concord Department of Fire and Life Safety and get their input.

Salisbury Fire Department Donates Turnout Gear to the Concord HS Fire Academy

Bob Etheridge of the Governors Office stops by for a Visit

Representative Bob Etheridge and his wife Faye stopped by the Concord High School Fire Academy for a visit on September 20, 2011. It was really nice to see them again after such a long time. Chief Barlow was serving as the Region 6 Teacher of the Year when Bob Etheridge last came to visit.

Representative Etheridge is the former NC State School Superintendent and served as a Congressman in the US House of Representatives from 1996 - 2010 where he authored and championed the Hometown Heroes Act of 2003. After leaving Congress Governor Beverly Perdue appointed him as the head of the NC Office of Economic Recovery and Investment which oversees funds to the state from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Battalion 2 progressed nicely with their Ventilation Class and nearing the end of the class we were asked to do an Interview for WSOC-TV Channel 9 News with Allison Latos.

The recruits were given the opportunity to design their demonstration showcasing their skills in Vent - Enter - Search.

The Skills included:
Emergency Response as a Full Engine Company
Initial Size-up on the Radio with Command Established
Forcible Entry
Stretching the Attack Line and a Backup Line
Searching the structure - Primary Search with victim found and rescued and Secondary Search
Ladder Work with a Backup Ladder on the opposite side of the structure
Ventilation Team simulating cutting the Vent Hole on the roof and punching the ceiling.
All tasks were communicated to Command and updates were provided to Communications
Knot Tying Skills were also demonstrated.

The Interview went well and Chief Allen of Concord Fire and Life Safety assisted.

Mr. Satenstein's Trade and Industry Class attended the CHS Fire Academy during the week of October 17-21 for a sampling of what the Fire Academy offers.
The recruits learned how to Tag In, Classes of Fire, Fire Chemistry, Types of Fire Equipment, and how to use PPE, Hoses, Streams, and Hydrants.
A Lot was learned and a Good Time was had by All.

The Concord High School Fire Academy has partnered with Can Do Recycling - South and is in the process of trying to Recycle as many cans as possible. This not only saves energy, but provides us with a year round income by getting the local community and the school community to recycle their cans to assist the CHS Fire Academy.

After returning from Rhode Island, I found a Maple Tree in my truck as a Memorial for my mother. It is so appropriate since I collected Maple Sap with my mother as a young child and learned how to make Maple Syrup. Thank You Amber and Mrs. Cline for orchestrating such an appropriate Memorial.
It is now planted in my front yard.

This program is one that has been received with great success by numerous High Schools throughout the state and is operated by members of the Greensboro Fire Department, High Point Fire Department and the Guilford County Fireman's Association.

Captain R. D. Faggart of Concord Department of Fire and Life Safety learned about the program and worked diligently to get the program delivered to Concord High School. It is hoped that Concord Fire and Life Safety will be able to produce a similar program and offer it for the students throughout Cabarrus County.

After several meetings by a very dedicated team of professionals the date was set and all cooperating agencies were ready to conduct the program. On Monday afternoon the VIP Team drove down from Greensboro to set up for the morning assembly for all of our Juniors and Seniors.
Early the next morning the remainder of the VIP for a VIP Staff arrived with tractor trailers carrying bleachers and the remainder of the materials used in the program.

The program consists of a morning assembly where speakers from the State Highway Patrol, Local Fire Department, Police Department, EMS, share their perspective and then a series of videos are shared and finally a mock funeral is conducted.
The CHS Fire Academy Honor Guard assisted with the Funeral Service.

The afternoon session consists of a simulated vehicle crash with injury. The vehicle crash is conducted as if it were the real event. All units respond to the event rolling hot with lights and sirens. Not a sound was heard from the students - it was soo realistic.

Many Thanks to all of the Public Safety professionals that assisted and participated.
I feel like the students learned a great deal.

Thanks also to the PTSO for preparing lunch for the VIP Staff and the Honor Guard.

Concord High School Fire Academy Dedicates World Trade Center Artifact

Students from many classes came by to observe and pay respect

On Monday September 12, 2011 the Concord High School Fire Academy unveiled and dedicated a piece of the World Trade Center in a Ceremony at the school and it was broadcast on Channel 9 News and reported in the Local Newspaper The Independent Tribune.
The event was attended by Chief Holloway and Chief Allen of Concord Fire and Life Safety, Lisa Conger, Director of the CTE program for the Cabarrus County Schools, and members of the School Board and City Council.

The Concord High School Fire Academy Honor Guard stood guard over the Artifact for the remainder of the day so that any Teacher could bring their classes down to visit the artifact and have a more respectful and personal time with it.

The City of Concord and the Department of Fire and Life Safety conducted a wonderful Patriots Day Remembrance Ceremony on Sunday afternoon September 11, 2011 and unveiled a piece of the World Trade Center for all to see. Other attending agencies included: Harrisburg Fire Department, Kannapolis Fire and Police, Concord Police Department, Cabarrus County Sherrif's Department, Police Explorers, Concord High School Fire Academy Recruits.

Chief Rick Lasky of the Lewisville, Texas Fire Department is well known across the nation as a motivational speaker with his "Pride and Ownership" series. He officially retired at the end of August and will be missed by his Firefighting family. From what I understand, he will continue with his Pride and Ownership series with Chief John Salka of FDNY.

Concord High School Fire Academy Graduates its First OSFM Certified Firefighter I,II Recruit

Nathan Bryant
Nathan Bryant is the first recruit to become Firefighter I,II certified through the Concord High School Fire Academy program. Nathan's journey to certification as a NC Firefighter I,II was accomplished very quickly with 14 of the OSFM's 21 certification classes taken through our program. The other 7 classes were completed through Community College classes offered through local Fire Departments and Weekend Fire Schools. The most challenging of the classes were the Haz Mat Awareness and Operations class - 44 hours (He scored in the high 90's on the written exam) and Fire Control - 40 hours which finished up with Live Fire Training the weekend after graduation.
His certification was officially complete with the updated OSFM Transcript on Wednesday August 17th, 2011. The Firefighter I,II Certificate arrived on Friday 8-19-11 with the IFSAC Seal recognized in 43 States and a number of other Countries.

The NC Fire and Rescue Commission has information about the Reciprocity and Transfer of Certifications from other states.

Northeast Volunteer Fire Department
and Mount Pleasant Fire - Rescue throughout his Senior year.

Nathan will begin his Professional Firefighting career on September 2, 2011 as a part time Firefighter with Odell Fire Department in Cabarrus county.
He is also enrolled in the Associates Degree program in Fire Protection Technology at Rowan Cabarrus Community College.

JOPLIN - 29 Days After the Storm

On June 21, 2011 Chief Barlow and Brandon Blackwelder drove from the Skills USA National Conference in Kansas City, MO to Joplin, MO to tour and document the damage caused by the EF5 Tornado that ravaged the city just 29 days ealier.

The sights and smells, the crunching of powdered glass and wood, the total devastation and the items left behind were astounding. Nothing can prepare

you for having a boots on the ground experience like this. The photos and videos do not truly represent the devastation or the loss nor does it represent the spirit of the people who are rebuilding.
While there we were able to visit with the crew of Joplin Fire Department Station 2 that was on duty the evening of May 22, 2011 and had to remove the door of the Fire Station in order to get their reserve engine company out. The roof and wall had fallen on the primary engine company. These guys are operating out of two camping trailers along with the new Pierce Engine Company that was donated to replace the one they lost.

There were many photos that were Not Taken because to do so would be too painful for some or be in poor taste or disrespectful. As it is, this post has taken me a long time to prepare for and I plan to continue working on it throughout the summer. I have spent a long time researching and I have decided to put together a page on my personal website dedicated to Joplin

and the links that I feel really tell the story best.

The Death Toll as of July 11, 2011 stands at 159 with 13 still missing.

When we were there the Dusk to Dawn Curfew was still in place inside "The Zone"and all US flags were flying at half staff. Over the July 4th weekend, the flags were just raised to full staff.

This video gives a pretty good indication of the damage and the Lyrics match very well. The streets have no names - the names are literally painted on the pavement at the intersections.

I found this account of the events of the evening of May 22 from a Physician who is also a Stormchaser and who assisted at Freeman Hospital for the first 12 hours.

The street is becoming full of the more than 16,000 atendees Where to begin? This has been a very interesting year with Skills USA. Attending the NC Career and Technical Education Conference last summer to learn all that could be learned about Skills USA, Starting a new Chapter, attending the Camp Dixie Fall Leadership Seminar, entering 3 recruits for the Regional and State Competitions, being asked to serve as the State Chairperson (Coordinator) for the State Firefighting Competition, having recruits place 2nd, 6th, and 7th in the state contest, getting the call to have Brandon Blackwelder represent North Carolina at the National Conference, Training with Brandon at Concord Fire and Life Safety Station 3 in the CPAT, securing funds to make all this happen, and finally - Flying out to Kansas City after just returning from the Southeastern I-Chief's Conference in Montgomery, Alabama the night before and settling in for the week long conference and competition.
In the National Competition Brandon was one of 36 contestants including 25 High School and 11 Post Secondary or College contestants. Brandon received maximum points for the CPAT, Donning of Structural Turnout Gear, Ropes and Knots, and had a great CPAT time of 8:52 mins. Overall Brandon placed 19th out of the 25 High School competitors with a score of 91.80%. The areas that kept him out of the medals was the Written Test and the Interview. We will know what we will need to work on for next year with him and all of our other recruits. On the way home from the State Competition in April the goal was set to have at least the top 5 places in NC on the stage next year and that means a repeat to the Nationals as well.

The written Test was held in Bartle Hall at the main Skills USA conference site on Tuesday morning. On Tuesday after the written Test, Chief Barlow and Brandon drove the 140 miles to Joplin, MO to survey and document the Tornado damage. (Next Blog Entry) The other portions of the competition were held at the Kansas City, MO Fire Academy in North Kansas City on Deramus Road beginning on Wednesday morning.

The Training Division of the Kansas City Fire-Rescue Department could not have been more professional and accomodating. The stations for the Turnout Gear donning, Rope and Knot skills, and Interviews were set up, numbers were drawn to determine the order of testing and because Brandon's Mother, Brother, and Grandfather were flying in to see the event, Brandon was permitted to be the last candidate to complete his CPAT.
When it was realized that his family would be arriving later than expected due to delayed flights, Chief Tommy Walker - Chief of Training, arranged for a Fire Department car to pick the family up at the airport and bring them directly to the Fire Academy and got a member of the Fire Department media staff to videotape Brandon's CPAT for him. Brandon's family was able to see him run his CPAT and became good friends with the members of the Training Division especially Chief Tommy Walker. Chief Walker invited Brandon and the family to return on Friday and drive the rear of the 100' Tiller Truck. You will be able to see in the photos just how wonderful these fine professionals are.

On June 17, 2011 the CHS Fire Academy Honor Guard drove to Montgomery, Alabama to participate in the I-Chief's Southeastern Conference. The Honor Guard was treated to seeing the Vendor Displays and watching the Firefighter's Combat Challenge. David Bowman of Charlotte Fire Department won the Individual Firefighter Combat Challenge with a time of 1:36:66 and his son is a senior at Mt. Pleasant High School and plans on attending the CHS Fire Academy next year. Chief Cline's daughter is the same age as Captain Amber Cline of the CHS Fire Academy Honor Guard.

"As your Assistant Chief, I would like to Thank All of You for making this a Great year. Through this year, we were told multiple times by other Firefighters how lucky we were to have this program and how they wished they would have had the opportunity to have it when they were going through high school. We look at it as what would we have done without the Academy. Most of us would not know what direction to go towards.

If it was not for the Concord Fire Department, Chief Barlow, and everyone else who has donated or been involved in starting and making this Academy a success, we wouldn't have our first Fire Truck, first Wet Down Ceremony, first Awards Night, and many more "firsts" to come.

I would like to Thank everyone who believed in us and helped to get us to where we are today. I would also like to give a huge thanks to Chief Barlow for teaching us not only the classes we needed but to also have Respect, Trust, and to work together as a Family."

On Saturday June 11th, 2011 Concord High School held its Graduation Ceremony marking the end of another school year at the CHS Fire Academy.

The CHS Fire Academy Honor Guard Presented the Colors. Four of our CHSFA Seniors rode to and from the Graduation on a Fire Apparatus. Chief Tabbi received her finished Scrapbook from Captain Amber Cline, and once again the traffic was bad and the heat and humidity was almost unbearable - as it usually is this time of year. Thanks to all who assisted to make this a successful and memorable day.

Recently Chief Barlow met with the Program Director of the
Rowan Cabarrus Community College Fire and Protection Technology Program - Dr. Joseph Woodall.

Several good things came out of the Articulation Meeting including an Articulation Agreement that permits students that take all three levels of the Fire Academy classes to receive credit for 4 classes if they enroll in the 2 year Associates Degree Program in Fire Protection Technology at RCCC within 2 years of graduation.

World Trade Center Steel - Our Very Own Piece of History

The Recruits carry the artifact into the school
Guarded by Leather N5A New Yorker Fire Helmets and a Ben II Fire Helmet and flanked by 2 crossed Fire Axes, this is a Temporary Memorial until we can secure a more permanent Memorial site for our WTC artifact. The Artifact will be Formally Dedicated during the week of 9-11-2011.

On Friday May 27th, 2011 the Concord HS Fire Academy was notified by Chief Allen that our artifact had arrived and that he would be bringing it to us within the hour. The Honor Guard and recruits that were available prepared to dignify the artifacts arrival with a procession wearing Turnout Gear and notified the Yearbook Staff. Several classes lined the halls and placed their hands over their hearts.
These students were only 6 or 7 years old when the World Trade Center was attacked nine and a half years ago.

CHS FIRE ACADEMY AWARDS NIGHT
2011

May 24th marked a milestone in the History of the CHS Fire Academy.
This night we had many parents, families, and recruits together for the first CHS Fire Academy Awards Night.
We started the evening off with the Presentation of the Colors by the CHS Fire Academy Honor Guard under the direction of Miss Amber Cline.
The Invocation followed and was delivered by Mr. Hayden Link.
Chief Barlow delivered "The Year In Review" which provided us with some pretty amazing Statistics about the CHS Fire Academy.

Deputy Chief of Operations for the Concord Dept. of Fire and Life Safety Mr. Ray Allen was our speaker and spoke about the Qualities that it takes to be a Firefighter. Chief Allen also mentioned the pieces of the World Trade Center that are scheduled to soon become a part of our Memorial Wall and the Memorial at Station 8.
During the program we recognized our Officers from each Battalion from this school year. We also recognized our Seniors that will be graduating as well as the seniors from last year.
We recognized our Honor Guard members and our Skills USA Team members.

Chief Barlow presented several awards which are the most prestigious.
The Good Jake Award is an Award for the Most Improved.

The program continued with a Video made up of short video clips
taken throughout the school year.
This transitioned into a "Roast" and introduction of our Assistant Chief - Tabbi Beck.
Chief Beck shared a few words about what it meant to her
to serve as the first Assistant Chief - (Student Chief) of the CHS Fire Academy.

As she concluded her thoughts, Captain Amber Cline came forward to present to Chief Beck a Scrapbook/Memory Book of Photos and Quotes from her tenure at the CHS Fire Academy. Amber had put this together for Chief Tabbi so that she could enjoy looking back.

Next on the program was the Pinning Ceremony. Chief Beck took the envelope that contained the Memo from Chief Barlow announcing the New Assistant Chief for 2011-2012 and opened it and read the Memo.
Taylor Beverly was called to the front to receive his
Assistant Chief Collar Brass for the coming year.
Chief Tabbi Beck will serve concurrently with Chief Taylor Beverly until the 2011 Graduation.
The Awards Night began to wind down
with the playing of the CHSFA Video from Semester I
and then the Semester II Video
Will James - aka. "Duck" wrote and performed
a single titled "The Academy".
After sharing this with the audience, the Awards night drew to a close.

Thanks to all of the Concord Fire and Life Safety personnel that came out and supported us on this evening as well as throughout the year. Thanks also to the Parents and the Family members, that made the effort to come out for this event. It means a lot to me as the Chief of the program, but it really means even more to the recruits. Thanks for a Great Year.

On Wednesday May 18th Battalion Chief Eury of the Training Division spoke with the recruits of Battalion II and Battalion III about what it takes to "Get The Badge with the Concord Department of Fire and Life Safety. After discussing the benefits of a career in the Fire Service and the steps to take to become a Firefighter, One thing that Chief Eury emphasised was the need to visualize yourself getting to that specific goal. Also discussed was the need to continuously learn and move forward with ones education.
The CFLS Reserve Firefighter Program was also discussed.

Chief Barlow made a presentation about the Concord High School Fire Academy to the NC Fire and Rescue Commission at their Spring meeting held on Tuesday April 12th , 2011 at the Pinecroft - Sedgefield Fire Department SW of Greensboro. The Fire and Rescue Commission meets quarterly. The reason for the overview and update was to let the Commission know first hand what is happening with the program since there is so much interest statewide and beyond about the High School Fire Academy program.

Concord Fire and Life Safety Recruit Class 17-7 Graduation

Concord Department of Fire and Life Safety Graduates 10 Recruits on Saturday April 9, 2011. The graduation was held at Westford United Methodist Church on Highway 49. The keynote speaker was Kenneth Mullins (Executive Director of the NC Fire Chief’s Association). Chief Mullins addressed the Recruits with words of encouragement and advice on a successful career in the fire service. As with previous graduations, the Honor Guard did a great job of posting and retrieving the colors, and Rev. Jimmy Barrett was present to deliver the invocation. During the badge pinning, Nick Zabel proposed to his girlfriend, Emily (she said yes).
Concord Fire and Life Safety gives two special awards at each graduation, the Fire Chief’s Award which rewards academics and the Training Award which rewards practical skills.
Nick Zabel was the recipient of the Fire Chief’s award, and Dustin Hooks was presented with the Training Award.
Congratulations to all of the graduates.

Chief Barlow presented each Recruit with a copy of the Psalm 91 Book and a Psalm 91 card from Operation Safety 91.

On Thursday March 31st, three members of the Concord HS Fire Academy competed in the 47th Annual Skills USA North Carolina State Tournament held at the Greensboro Collesium. The CHS Fire Academy was represented by: Battalion Chief Taylor Beverly, Captain Brandon Blackwelder, and Captain Kyle Franklin. There was a total of 15 contestants. Greensboro Engine 14 crew assisted as Judges along with Fayetteville Battalion Chief David Hargis and Fred Curley of E.E. Smith Fire Academy in Fayetteville, NC. Chief David Barlow served as the Coordinator of the competition.

The Concord HS Fire Academy was visited on Thursday by representatives of the Iredell Statesville Schools and the Statesville Fire Department.

Mrs. Shelley Wolf of the Iredell-Statesville Schools, Statesville Fire Chief David Bullins, and Deputy Chief Dennis Hutchins, stopped by to find out first hand how our program operates. After a presentation in the classroom, the visitors were taken outside for a demonstration of the recruits skills. Using a replacement truck for the Black Widow driven by Chief Ray Allen of Concord Fire and Life Safety, the recruits demonstrated the skills used in the fire service on an actual structural response. Chief Eury of the CFLS Training Division was also present.

A Big Thank You to Concord Fire And Life Safety for their assistance with this demonstration.

Skills demonstrated included:

Catching the Hydrant
Stretching the Attack line and extending it to the second floor up a stairwell
Forcible Entry
Laddering the Building with a 35 foot extension ladder
Carrying a Roof Ladder and tools to the Roof
Raising an uncharged hose line to the roof using utility rope
Ladder Lock on the Roof Ladder and using the Hoseline at higher elevation with both hands
Stretching a secondary attack line and flowing water

After completing the demonstration and returning the apparatus to service, the recruits shared their "Whoo Cheer" and the CHS Fire Academy Video was shown.

Ventilation Practicals at Concord Fire and Life Safety Training Grounds

The CHS Fire Academy traveled to the Concord Fire and Life Safety Training Grounds at Station #3 where the Crew of Rescue 3 and Chief Barlow worked with the Recruits to complete their Practicals on Ventilation. Using the Ventilation Prop and working in teams of two, the recruits were able to actually complete cutting the 4x4 vent hole on the roof and punch the ceiling. Doing this in this type of setting was also a great way to practice some of our

ladder skills as well.

Cosmetology Student Offers Haircuts for the CHS Fire Academy

One of the CTE Cosmetology students at Concord High School - Mackenzie Bezdziecki, has offered to provide Haircuts for the Recruits and Chief Barlow at a reduced rate. Mackenzie must complete a certain number of haircuts to become licensed. She is also at the top of her class and does a wonderful job. Chief Barlow was the first at the Fire Academy to take advantage of this offer.

The CHS Fire Academy was treated to a unique opportunity to learn how to force entry into commercial buildings as well as residential structures on Thursday March 3rd when Greg Summitt, another one of Chief Barlow's former students brought his "Home Built" Forcible Entry Prop to the Fire Academy.

In addition to the Door Prop, Chief Summitt brought examples of commercial door cylinder locks: One that had been Pulled out by a K-Tool and Halligan, One that had been removed by a Pipe Wrench, and one that was untouched to show the differences between the three. He also brought an electric set of cutters produced by HURST.

Greg is a career Firefighter with Kannapolis Fire Department and is the Assistant Chief of the Cleveland Fire Department in Rowan County.

Chief Barlow and a contingent from the CHS Fire Academy attended the NC Fire Chief's Association Mid Winter Conference on Febuary 5th, 2011 to present a workshop session titled:

"Partnering to Train the Future of the NC Fire Service"

The Presentation was well attended with approximately 80 Fire Chiefs and personnel from across the state and beyond.

The presentation started at 0900 hours with Chief Randy Holloway of Concord Fire and Life Safety introducing Chief Barlow of the CHS Fire Academy. During the presentation, Steve Sloan of the NC Fire and Rescue Commission and the OSFM mentioned that the CHSFA was what the OSFM wanted to use as a model for the State.

The presentation included a PowerPoint and a 5 minute video.

Operation Safety 91 was included as one of our Partner Agencies and materials were available for the workshop participants to take back to their Fire Departments.

The CHSFA Recruits were available after the presentation for questions and comments.

After the presentation, several offers for other presentations were requested.
Chief Barlow has been asked to present to the NC Fire and Rescue Commission in April, and has been asked to present at the
IAFC Southeastern Conference in June in Montgomery, Alabama.

I received an Email several days ago from a reader of our Blog from Orlando, Florida.

Matthew Phillips is a student at the University of Central Florida and he was interested in sharing some information that he is very passionate about. That being the proper care that should be taken when it comes to a firefighter’s health, especially with Asbestos exposure while extinguishing fires.

ASBESTOS AND THE FIRE SERVICE
Being vigilant is hard work, and it's a huge part of being a firefighter. But it's not enough to keep your eyes open for everyday occupational hazards. Sometimes it takes a little information to protect yourself. Cancer may not seem like an occupational hazard that a firefighter needs to watch out for, but it certainly is. In older buildings and homes, builders used a natural mineral called asbestos. It can still be found in dry wall and in insulation in those homes. Asbestos is fire-resistant, and was supposed to make a lot of homes safer for a lot of people. Today, when those homes are disturbed, for example, as you break down the walls of a burning building, asbestos fibers are released into the air. When inhaled, they may cause a deadly cancer that can attack the lungs: mesothelioma. Mesothelioma symptoms can include shortness of breath and chest heaviness. Sound familiar? They should. These symptoms are often confused with other more common, more treatable diseases. Even worse, mesothelioma symptoms are latent, often for up to 50 years. By then, the cancer has spread and treatment is either difficult or impossible.The government has taken measures to protect professionals like firefighters, military veterans, and construction and demolition workers from asbestos exposure. Though they passed laws, like 1971's OSHA, that were supposed to protect those exposed to asbestos, there are still thousands that don't get the protection they need and deserve. Organizations like the AFL-CIO are rallying behind those who have already been exposed to asbestos and have developed mesothelioma. Though an act was passed to provide for victims, groups like AFL-CIO are fighting for more support.So what can you do? Find out more about asbestos exposure and the dangers of mesothelioma. Search the web; ask a doctor; visit a library. There are resources designed to provide us with what we need to know. With more information, you have a better chance of avoiding asbestos exposure. You've always protected us. It's time for you to protect yourselves.

On Thursday, December 23, 2010 Chief Barlow delivered the CHS Fire Academy Toys For Tots collection to the Salvation Army in Concord, NC. The collection was open to the entire High School as well as the CHS Fire Academy Battalions. The donations this year totaled 25 gifts.

I am sure that the recipients of these gifts will enjoy these.

Firefighter Clay Thornburg Critically Injured

Wednesday, December 29, 2010
There has been another crash incident involving a Firefighter responding on a run.
Firefighter Clay Thornburg, 17, of the Hugh's Pond VFD in Gaston County, NC was responding to a dwelling fire last night at around 22:45 when he went off the road to the right and hit a driveway culvert and flipped his truck 5 times.
He was wearing a seat belt.
Members of his own FD (Hugh's Pond) found him and had to extricate him from his pickup truck. He was treated and transported by EMS to Cleveland Regional Medical Center and was then flown to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. As of this morning, he is still in a coma with a severe skull fracture, brain swelling, and nerve damage to his shoulder and is listed in critical condition.

On Wednesday, December 23, 2010 Rowan and Cabarrus County lost a very dedicated Firefighter to a heart attack as he worked out at the South Rowan YMCA.

David Carpenter, 58, was an Engineer for the Kannapolis Fire Department and the Assistant Chief of the China Grove Fire Department. We held his Memorial service yesterday. The Salisbury Post Newspaper article about this event is HERE.

"Carp" and I have run many, many, calls together and he will be sorely missed.

On Wednesday December 22, 2010 the CHSFA was visited by Mr. Gary Styers, the Fire Marshal for the Mooresville Fire Department and his K-9 partner Manly.

Manly is an Accelerant Detection Canine that was used for about 9 years as an ATF Agent to detect accelerants that he was able to find on Fire Scenes and was able to help prosecute Arsonists in the southeastern US. Manly has been retired now for about 3 years, but is still very much on top of his game as demonstrated for the students at the Fire Academy.

This Bureau or division within the Department of Fire and Life Safety encompasses many things such as operating the Fire Safety House, Fire Prevention Programs to many different age groups, Car Safety Seats, Bicycle Rodeos, Senior Citizen Fire Safety, Beginning Bike Safety, Evacuation Planning, Home Fire Hazards, Severe Weather, First Aid, Water Safety, and Pedestrian Safety, Smoke Alarm programs, and more...

As part of the Fire Prevention, Fire Education, and Fire Cause Determination class, an effort has been made this year to incorporate Puppets into the CHS Fire Academy program. Chief Barlow already has "Jake" his Firefighter ventriloquist puppet and the "Blue Monster". Several students got to be pretty good with him and another student brought in his Police Officer puppet and his red Boy puppet.

First, we looked at several Children's Books and tried to see if these would provide us with messages that we could share with younger students. After that, we worked on scripts for our home made puppets with limited success. Next we looked at Peepers Puppet Videos, The Legoland Firefighter Show, and Fire Prevention Puppet Shows. Smokebusters Fire Safety videos, and Fire Marshal Bill Videos. Finally we worked on a couple of videos to place on You Tube and one of our recruits built a Puppet Stage of PVC.

The CHSFA Honor Guard and the Police Explorer's Honor Guard under the direction of the Concord Fire and Life Safety Honor Guard performed the presentation of the colors at the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony on Friday night November 19th, 2010 to kick off the HolidaySeason.

The Annual Christmas Parade will be held on Saturday Nov. 20.

Chief Barlow still does not know what he wants to do when he grows up!!

The recruits of the 3rd Battalion surprised Chief Barlow with two cakes, soda, and a visit from Concord Fire and Life Safety Engine 1 on his Birthday. They also presented him with an autographed (by all of 3rd Battalion) portable Fire Extinguisher as well. Chief Barlow still thinks that it was their way of delaying the OSFM test on Portable Fire Extinguishers. :) :)

This week is a Concord Kannapolis Tradition and rivalry that has reached amazing proportions. This is the longest running High School Football Rivalry in the State of NC and this year celebrated its 80th anniversary. During this week there is a Canned food Drive, Bonfire, Parade, School decorating contest, and of course the Battle for the Bell. These are a few pictures of the crazy weeks activities.

The tones hit. The Engine Crew was dispatched to the CHS Fire Academy Classroom on Wednesday, October 13th, 2010. There is a report of victims inside the structure.

With this Practical evolution with full PPE, Battalion 3 completes Search evolutions as a crew looking for victims with full PPE including SCBA with Nomex Hoods turned backwards to give low visibility and emphasize the "Feel" of searching as well as developing good communications and accountability.

The CHS Fire Academy was visited on Tuesday October 12, 2010 by the Middle School Counselors from across Cabarrus County to learn first hand what our program was like and to find out what we offered. The visit was part of a 4 stop county wide tour call "Get on the Bus". The trip was designed to showcase 4 of the Career and Technical Education programs that Middle School Counselors need to be aware of so that they can advise their students about what is available in the High School programs throughout the county.

Assistant Chief Tabittha Beck Welcomed the Guests and spoke about her experiences with the program and also about SkillsUSA and our firefighter competition team.

Chief Randy Holloway of the Concord Department of Fire and Life Safety spoke about the role of the "Partner Agency" and explained that he felt that "This program is the single most important thing that has been done in the last 20 years by his department to promote the future of the Fire Service".

Captain Amber Cline spoke about her role as a Captain and her role as the Drill Commander on the Honor Guard.

Lieutenant Johnny Tucker spoke about his role as a member of the "Widow Keepers" and about our new Hose Family.

Battalion Chief Jake Swaim spoke about his role as the Battalion Chief and about the Presidential Physical Fitness program. His PT team demonstrated the "Square Pushups" that are a CHSFA trademark.

After a Question and Answer period, one of the Counselors volunteered to dress out in Turnout Gear including SCBA and dragged Hose the mannequin across the floor.

After the inside demonstration, all went out to see The Black Widow and get photos taken with it and to flow water from a section of hose attached to the Fire Hydrant.

Concord Fire and Life Safety provided children's Fire Helmets, Stickers, and Oven Sticks for all.

Lieutenants Johnny Tucker and Mehi Carruth welcome the Hose family to the CHSFA and explain the roles that they will play to them.

The construction continues - Getting Ready To Get Ready

With this blog post, we want to share with you the newest members of the CHS Fire Academy, The Hose Family.

The adult male is named Hose, The adult female is Hosanna, and the Child is named Hoo-Rah.

These three new members are Training Aids or Props that never complain, whine, or act immature. They always remain silent even though one is a toddler and is in diapers. They do not ask for food or drink and always remain in a state of unconcious oblivion. They are also impervious to pain, which should serve them well.

They were constructed from old Fire Hose and 6"x 6" and 4"x 4" lumber blocks and fastened together with screws. The arms and legs are life-like and bendable.

They are the first of many projects that the Level 1,2, and next year's level 3 classes will construct as we go forward with the CHS Fire Academy. Next semester we plan on rescuing them with ladders. For now, they will be rescued on a regular basis using search tactics in full turnout gear and blacked out face masks or flash hoods turned backwards.

The latest edition of the Concord Fire and Life Safety Newsletter "Fully Involved" was published on October 5th 2010. There is a lot of Pride and Dedication that is showcased in this publication. It represents the department well.

Deana Martin - Executive Assistant for the Concord Department of Fire and Life Safety is the individual responsible for producing this wonderful newsletter. I think she does an amazing job representing the many facets of the Fire Department.

SkillsUSA NC Fall Leadership Conference at Camp Dixie

Assistant Chief of the CHS Fire Academy Tabittha Beck and Kyle Franklin along with Chief Barlow attended the SkillsUSA North Carolina Fall Leadership Conference at Camp Dixie on September 26-28, 2010.

This program which is held annually, is designed to show the participants the full scope of the SkillsUSA program on a Statewide, and National level, and to get the students energized to bring the excitement back to their respective Chapters in their schools.

The 2010 SkillsUSA North Carolina Fall Leadership Conference was a huge success with over 180 students and advisors from all over the state in attendance. The energy was high, the excitement was great, and the impact was tremendous. This was one of the greatest conferences held at Camp Dixie in SkillsUSA history. From day one, students and teachers were broken out of their comfort zones as they were split into five groups with other students and teachers from across the state. It wasn’t longer before strangers became teammates and friends as each of the five groups worked diligently to prepare themselves for leadership competition and the Great Experience. Only one group could be crowned champion at Camp Dixie 2010, and everyone realized that they had to learn and grow as a team in order to win. The course of the net two days brought many activities, games, and workshops that helped attendees mature not only as leaders, but as individuals. Students learned what it took to be a strong leader, how to speak about SkillsUSA, how to run a meeting, and how to adoobeedobe (if you don’t know what this is, you will have to come to Camp Dixie next year to find out). The next two days also brought intense competition, from public speaking to 3 point shootouts and from tv commercials to boat races. And of course their was plenty of swimming, canoeing, blobbing, and pig picking thrown in to make it interesting. At the end of the day, one team was recognized at the competition winners and was awarded the coveted Dixie Cup, however, all of those in attendance walked away pumped up and energized because they realized that they were all Champions as a result of the attitude and approach that they now had when working in teams or facing challenges. SkillsUSA North Carolina would like to thank all of those who came out and made Camp Dixie 2010 an unbelievably great experience! Hoo-Rah!

Even though the rains fell all day on Sunday - Monday night, the sun finally came out on Tuesday morning. Spirits remained high and several students were heard saying that they wished that all students could attend Camp Dixie.

Cabarrus County School Board Recognizes Chief Barlow and the Concord High School Fire Academy

The Cabarrus County School Board recognized Chief Barlow and the Concord High School Fire Academy at the Business Meeting on Monday September 20, 2010.

Ms. Lisa Conger, Director of the Career and Technical Education Program spoke to the school board about how difficult it was to find an instructor for the Fire Academy, but just how good a match it was when they did find Chief Barlow.

Also attending the meeting were recruits, Zack McClure, Kyle Franklin, and Brandon Blackwelder.

Chief Barlow and the Fire Academy were recently presented with a Commendation from Congressman Bob Etheridge who was the NC State School Superintendant.
